A network of personal growth
I think it's really important that every individual feels that they have a direct role in the improvement of their health and happiness. A lot of folks seem to feel that they need to 'hand over the reins' of their health to their doctor or health-care practitioner, trusting that persons' expertise over their own.
I prefer to think of it another way: While you may not be an expert in these various forms of healthcare, you know more than anyone about your own body and your own life. To that end you get to choose a number of practitioners to work with, get a feeling for their philosophies and capabilities, and work with them towards your own health and betterment goals.
Sometimes you'll meet an amazing doctor or acupuncturist, and after a couple sessions you'll have a sense that your body 'learned' what it needed from them. Other times you'll meet someone who you work with on and off, or regularly, for years. Both experiences can be life-changing.
Below are some of the people who I've found to be incredibly helpful in my own growth, both in recovery from injuries as well as in moving towards being the best person I can be. I highly recommend that if you're interested, you pay them a visit or two, and then notice what your own thoughts or intuitions are. Maybe they'll help you as much as they helped me.

Other Massage therapists to visit while I'm on vacation:Rachel Yamagiwa- 206-545-3887 Expert treatment work. Ben Jahn- 206-898-0105 Soothing, slow deep tissue, with great music. Rachel Hamstra- 206-852-8692 It ain't massage, it's Feldenkreis. While not soothing in the same way massage can be, this is one of the most powerful ways I've seen to teach your body how to move in a happy, pain-free manner. And Rachel is phenomenally gifted in this modality. Joe Lavin- http://www.touchfactormassage.com/ Great table thai and deep lomi, strong, skilled bodywork. Jacob Michael - (206) 999-3418 Jacob Michaels is a Stott Pilates trainer, and an excellent human being. When it comes to the human body, he is one of the most knowledgable people I've ever come across- and that list includes a lot of highly trained people.
Jacob's understanding of how every little muscle works together to create different kinds of movement is phenomenal, and he can help you understand the way you move, and guide you in the subtle art of coaching your body to carry itself in a far more comfortable, more effective manner. I work with him every week, learning to improve the movement of my body and to carry myself (and my massage equipment) in a healthier and more graceful manner. In addition, I've made huge strides in overcoming some chronic injuries and pain patterns. Jacob has a vast repertoire of knowledge in core development, stability, and healthy movement. What's equally impressive to me is his attitude towards that knowledge. Unlike many health-oriented trainers and practitioners I've worked with, Jacob is highly attuned to what's going on with me each moment: if I tell him something is uncomfortable, he instantly adjusts the exercise appropriately. Not only will he come up with a more comfortable version of that exercise, he'll take the time to understand what might be going on with my body that made the original exercise uncomfortable, and will do research on his own time to figure out how to resolve that. In short, he knows a heck of a lot, and he's constantly striving to learn more. I very much suggest you look him up if you're looking to teach your body how to be stronger, healthier, smarter, and far more durable. |
Annabeth Macy - (206) 297-1126 Dr. Annabeth Macy is a Network Chiropractor, and an expert in helping your body and mind work together in a deep and profound way.
She is a trained chiropractor, and currently a practitioner of Network Spinal Analysis and Somato Respiratory Integration. In my years of receiving everything from naturopathic medicine to massage to acupuncture, I've never received care quite like what Dr. Macy offers, and I'm consistently pleased by the newness and effectiveness of her approach. In my three months of working with her my health and happiness has made huge strides. I've noticed progress in areas of my life that I'd previously been uncertain on how to proceed. Specifically, everyday matters that used to really throw me for a loop began to seem like much smaller issues. Bad moods seemed more transient, and random pains in my body became much more fleeting. Although everyone's specific experience will be different, I've constantly been impressed by Dr. Macy's flexibility, knowledge, and powerful communication skills. She always seemed to know how to explain things in just the right way, or to say just the right thing, that would help me make the realization or internal shift that I needed. If you're looking for something that will supercharge your healing, or your development as a person, I highly recommend you meet her. Suzanne Astar- (206) 919-3158 Suzanne is a bit of a body wizard. How so? Well, we can do a session over Skype that leaves me feeling just as aligned if I had a full hour of bodywork.
It's not woo-woo, it's skill. She can look at how you're standing, how your joints are aligned, and coach you through a series of small adjustments and exercises until you're feeling relaxed, grounded in your body, and probably in a lot less pain. After I was in a mild but painful car accident, she was the person who helped me get rid of the last of my pain. How does she do it? You'll have to ask her. But if you're feeling uncomfortable and massage just isn't doing the trick, I highly recommend her. |
